Dear Savvy Senior,
I've fallen several times over the past year and my doctor has recommended that I start a strength-training program to help prevent future falls. But at age 72, I've never lifted weights before and could use some help. What can you tell me?
Looking for Help
President Trump recently unveiled his plan for gun laws and ways to try and put an end to the growing consistency of mass shootings. The most interesting part of the plan was to arm teachers in schools.
Schools are places for our children to learn and they shouldn't be terrified each and every day that a school shooting is possible or that their lives are at risk. Possibly for the first time in Trump's presidency I can actually agree with him on something while completely despising him in almost every way.
The reality is shootings are happening and it's time that something be done. What did Obama do after Sandy Hook? Pretty much nothing. Trump is actually trying something, he is doing something, but instead is garnering more criticism than positivity. Maybe his idea will work, it's sure a lot better then not doing anything at all.
Castle Rock Auto Licensing opened in July of 2017 and Amy Hair, owner, wants to help with your licensing needs. The minute you walk in to her office, you know she is going to help you because she loves what she does and it shows.
Hair was chosen by the state to have the contract for the Castle Rock area. She put in her application and from that moment on she has been busy. "The government decided where the licensing would go but I felt that Castle Rock was an under-served area. I love Castle Rock, Toutle and the surrounding area. I was glad to open my business here," stated Hair.
Napavine's wrestlers are noted for their strength, perseverance and great attitudes. Since wrestling requires patience, sacrifices and mindfulness, our athletes dedicate everything they have. A team of Napavine's students decided to dedicate an entire assembly to Coach Jay Terry and his wrestling teams.
Napavine had four boy athletes headed to the State Championship. Kaitlin Bornstein accompanied them as she might've been able to participate as a sub as well.
Sydney Burdick also tagged along to watch and cheer on her teammates.
Vault Books & Brew and Castle Rock Elementary School are excited to host award winning children's writer Suzanne Selfors. The visit was made possible from a chance encounter between Vault Books & Brew owner Jennifer Engkraf and Selfors at the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Trade show late last year.
The first snowfall of the year began falling early morning on Feb. 20 with little to no warning. Fortunately, many didn't mind as Raymond, South Bend, and Willapa Valley Schools closed for a snow day to much delight of students and agony of parents.
On Feb. 20 at approximately 8:00 a.m. a Toyota pickup driven by a 21 year old Raymond resident lost control in icy conditions and hit a transit bus at the intersection of Fowler St. and Highway 101 in Raymond.
According to the crash report provided to the Herald by Raymond Police Chief Chuck Spoor. The transit bus was initiating a turn onto Fowler St. during a green light when the Toyota pickup approached a red light and slid into the intersections due to icy conditions.
Willapa Valley's basketball season opened with an overtime win, and ended with an overtime loss. Head coach Jay Pearson, who was named Coach of the Year by his Pacific League peers, was dealt a tough card before the campaign got underway when his team lost the services of one of its best players when senior Walker Oblad went down with an injury during the summer. The Vikes bit the bullet and responded like strong soldiers while turning in a super season. Willapa Valley started the season by running off seven straight victories. Valley ended the season with an overall record of 17-6 with the six losses by a total of just 26 points. The last four defeats were by three, two, one and five points.
