Burn restrictions modified, allowing recreational fires

On Oct. 6 at 12:01 a.m., the Lewis County Board of County Commissioners and Lewis County Fire Marshal modified the ban on recreational fires for all of unincorporated Lewis County.

Starting on Oct. 16 at 12:01 a.m., the current ban on open burning for Lewis County. For further information visit burnpermit.lewiscountywa.gov.

Murder Suicide in Winlock leaves two family members dead

The Lewis County Sheriff's office is investigating a murder suicide on the Tennessee Road in Winlock, Washington.

Initially detectives and fire personnel were called to the resident at 4:14 p.m. when a 63 year old female accidentally fell into her well while trying to add chlorine. The female had fallen approximately 50 feet, was rescued and transported to the hospital for treatment.

It was during the rescue efforts that two of the females brothers (ages 59 years old and 56 years old) were on the site with the older brother being disruptive. The 59 year old was asked to leave and engaged in a verbal dispute with his brother.

Vader's National Day of Service

In memory of the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush asked that each year in the United States we observe Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. Vader Mayor, Ken Smith, has made sure the citizens in his community have an opportunity to do just that. For six of the past 7 years, the City of Vader has engaged in the National Day of Service held on the Saturday closest to September 11.

The candidate forum opened up to a crowd of nearly 40 interested local residents in South Bend last Thursday night. The Willapa Chamber of Commerce hosted the event with Mike Williams, the Chamber president, and Michelle Layman, the Chamber director working as the moderators.

New PUD General Manager

New PUD General Manager

October 1 marked a changing of the guard for PUD (Public Utility District) #2 here in Pacific County as Jason Dunsmoor officially stepped into his role as the general manager of PUD #2, replacing former General Manager, Doug Miller.

Dunsmoor started his journey with PUD in 1992 (almost 26 years ago) as a utilities engineer.

Over the years he's held a few positions including chief engineer and then in 1994, when Miller took over as the general manager, Dunsmoor took on the role of chief of engineering operations.

South Bend breaks ground on new baseball/fastpitch field

"I've never talked into a microphone in the middle of a dirt hill before, so that will be a new experience." Stated South Bend School District Superintendent Jon Tienhaara as he began the ground breaking ceremony on what will be the new Cheney Park Baseball Field for the South Bend School District baseball and fastpitch teams. The field will be located behind Bud's Lumber.
