Winlock Mayor Lonnie Dowell has confirmed a grant to help replace Fir St. bridge is expected to soon be approved by the state and the project could end up costing the city no funding out of pocket.
During an interview Friday, Dowell stated engineers with HDJ have learned a grant request submitted to the state's Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) is expected to be approved for $567,000 which, when coupled with a $3.63 million federal grant, should cover all costs for replacing Fir St. Bridge and repairing portions of Walnut St. Bridge.
The Vader City Council has tabled a resolution seeking to add a potential name change to the November ballot as officials consider public opinion before passing the issue to voters.
Discussed during the council's May 28 meeting, a ballot measure renaming Vader to Little Falls, as it had been named when incorporated in 1906, was first broached last October when officials considered the potential cost of including the issue on the ballot and the effects of a name change, if approved.
A special meeting on Monday of the Winlock City Council to select a long-term law enforcement option has been cancelled as city staff do not expect to have all the information requested by the council before that date.
While members of the council had indicated they wished to meet Monday to potentially make their decision after receiving a bid from the Lewis County Sheriff's Office May 27, City Clerk Theda Curry confirmed Friday the special meeting has been cancelled and the council will instead discuss the issue during a workshop before their next regular meeting June 8.
