Multitude of elected positions soon open for filing

A number of local cities and special purpose districts have several positions open for the November General Election, and the timeline to file for candidacy is coming up soon.

Between May 11 and 15, all residents legally qualified to run for such positions will be able to file with their county's Auditor's Office, either in person or online, while filings by mail are being accepted at this time until May 15, but will not be processed until May 11.

Winlock Council asked to consider $18 utility increase

The City of Winlock has been encouraged to increase its base water/sewer rates by at least $18 per month for residential users after a study indicated both systems are significantly under-funding reserves.

Discussed April 27 during a presentation by the Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC), the City Council was told a study conducted by RCAC during the last several months showed Winlock needed more cash on hand if they wanted to pay out of pocket for equipment and materials that may need replacing, rather than depend on loans or grants to do the same.

Castle Rock tables raise for Chief Heuer while responding to criticism

The Castle Rock City Council has defended their decision to consider a 12 percent pay increase for Police Chief Bob Heuer after receiving sharp criticisms regarding the issue during public comment.

Though the council had been anticipating a vote on the matter during their April 27 meeting, only three council members were present and the issue was tabled, as officials have said they feel input from every member of the council is needed to appropriately consider the increase. Though a motion had been made during their April 13 meeting to increase the chief's pay, it failed to pass after a tie vote Mayor Paul Helenberg was unable to break, according to fiscal policy.
