Ryderwood News 04.01.15

Happy April and Happy April Fool's Day. On the latter, a day reserved for pranks and practical jokes is a tradition that dates back many centuries and is practiced in many different geographical regions. It is thought to have originated in France, but it spread quickly and easily elsewhere.

As the days get longer, the greens are greener and more blooms are blossoming every day. A weather system that recently blew through seems to have brought quite an assortment of songbirds. Our beautiful violet-green swallows have arrived and I found a young yellow-rump warbler sitting in the middle of Jackson St. I imagine it was totally exhausted from its flight. Hard to believe April Fool s' day is already here. No I won't be putting any pranks in my column this week but I did think about doing the Orson Welles "The War of the Worlds" story by H.G. Wells....Then I realized it didn't go over well in 1938 and it probably would not go over well today! It did have the nation in a panic back then, I can't imagine what it would have been like to hear that on the radio, must have shocked everyone!!

Vader councilor among WWII vets honored during trip to DC

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, and with hundreds of American veterans of this war estimated to die every day, it is becoming more important to let them know the value of their service.
