Chief talks cyber bullying with Winlock students

Winlock Police Chief Terry Williams (far right) speaks with fifth graders from Winlock Miller Elementary School on Feb. 11 about the dangers of cyber bullying, as the trend of such activity increases among students that age. Speaking also with fourth graders, Williams told the kids the most important thing to do if they believe they have been the target of cyber bullying is to tell an adult, such as their parents, a teacher, or a police officer, as some offenses can be very serious and require the response of law enforcement.

Books by Barb and Becky - How it Went Down

Becky here. I recently read How it Went Down by Kekla Magoon; fast-paced, topical, with great characterization and an undercurrent of suspense, How it Went Down was a quick read.

I read it in a night and returned it to the library the next day. But not to be dismissed, this book has lingered in my mind, and the more I think about it, the more I like and appreciate it. How it Went Down opens with a street shooting in a fictional urban ghetto rife with gang violence.

Here's hoping that working folks enjoyed their day off on Monday. For us oldsters, holidays like that have little impact except that the Post Office and banks are closed.

After more than six inches of rain in the first 10 days of the month, there has been a very pleasant spell of nice weather. All this sunshine has spring bulbs and flowering shrubs opening up everywhere you look. Weather like this makes it easier for me to enjoy my upcoming birthday.

Congratulations to Azhia Camps for winning the Egg Day button art contest. The buttons features the logo Eggs-Perience Winlock with a picture of a chicken with the coop building in the back. It looks to me like the chicken is standing in the Worlds Largest Egg, it's a truly cool looking button once I realized where the location of the chicken is. You will get a chance to have your own once the Egg Day Princesses start to sell them.

Don't forget the Winlequa Senior Center will be having a watercolors painting class starting in March and also a quilting class will start on March 25th at 1:30. Remember to bring your own supplies for the quilting class. If you have any questions, please give the center a call at (360) 785-4325.

Officials urge compliance with Benton parking rules

An investigation into complaints about traffic snarls on Benton Ave. after Winlock Miller Elementary School gets out shows the problem lies mainly with motorists failing to observe posted parking rules, according to officials.

Confusion observed along the road after students are released in the afternoon had been brought up during the Feb. 9 meeting of the Winlock City Council, with Council Member Aaron Mummert stating he believes the city should look into making the road one-way to prevent near-collisions as parents and students attempting to avoid each other during the rush.

Opinions still polarized after third Vader pot hearing

A hearing regarding a ban against marijuana businesses in Vader turned largely into a QnA session with developer Brandon Milton, as many residents have had little more to add to discussions since the ban was passed last year.

First approved by the City Council on Jan. 23, 2014, the temporary ban, enacted as the city completes research and procedures necessary to consider a permanent ban, has twice received a six-month extension, with the most recent extension approved Jan. 8 of this year.

Smith nuisance lingers as county contemplates action

More than a year after initial complaints were received regarding a large debris pile at a planned subdivision in Winlock, the matter remains unresolved, though county officials state they are granting a little more time before pursuing further action.

Located on SR 505 near the intersection with Kakela Rd., Grand Prairie Mountain View Estates (GPMVE), a 200-home subdivision left largely-uncompleted amid foreclosure and changes in ownership, has been the subject of multiple complaints since January of last year regarding a large debris pile on the southern end of the property.

Law enforcement workshop results in call for community support

A greater level of community involvement was one of the recurring needs mentioned during a workshop in Winlock held Feb. 9 discussing the status of the city's law enforcement resources.

Held at the request of Council Member Arron Mummert, who had put forward the idea of a workshop during the council's Jan. 26 meeting, Mummert and other officials have said they are concerned about complaints from citizens that Winlock is being perceived as a safe haven for criminals who want to get away with their behavior, as evidenced by recurring property and drug crimes taking place in the area.
