Ryderwood News 12.10.14

It's looking very bright and cheerful around town these days. More homes than ever seem to be decorated, making things look very festive after dark. And since the shortest day of the year is less than two weeks away, that's pretty early. It's also a sign of how many homes have sold this year. There were four closing in just one week last month!

The holiday activities are gearing up also. The Women's Club will have their luncheon meeting this Wednesday at noon in Pioneer Hall with special entertainment by Norm Price. The next day has the ladies of the Ryderwood Women's Christian Service joining the annual Christmas Program at the Toledo Presbyterian Church. Contact Carol at (360) 295-3799 for info on carpooling - I believe the program is at 1:30 p.m.

Vader News 12.10.14

City Officials have detailed a plan to begin raising sewer rates starting with a $1 per month increase beginning in 2015. These are part of efforts to increase Vader's chances at acquiring funding for an upgraded sewer plant, with the reasoning being a city charging too little for sewer rates will be less able to maintain their plant, so a city charging more will make a more appealing candidate for grants and loans. While this seems like a catch-22, as the purpose of grants and loans is to keep rates down, officials have said they did not take this decision lightly and said it was the more difficult aspect of drafting next year's budget. Officials are expected to vote on their proposed budget during their meeting on Thursday.

Winlock News 12.10.14

How many of you are on FaceBook? Did you know there are several pages that have to do with Winlock? There is one called "You Know You Are from Winlock When" and it is a great trip down memory lane. There are a lot of former graduates on there who no longer live in the area. We talk about our old teachers, the old stores that used to be around when Winlock was bustling and photo's show up and you wonder who found them after all these years. Do you remember "Boys Ranch", where we all used to get our burgers? Or how about Prigmore's store or the Safeway that used to be downtown? It's fun reading about all the old stores that used to be here and the people who owned them. If you have a memory of Winlock, go on FaceBook and see how many remember it with you. I vividly remember the old Sarvela Store (aka Arth's Store) we would go over to Ferrier Road and get our ice cream or we would go to the Drug Store and sit at the Soda Fountain. Do you remember hanging out in these stores? I sure do.

Toledo's Moore not one to be on the sidelines
Toledo's Moore not one to be on the sidelines

There are some are seniors that are hard to place as a factor in a particular sport and then there are some that are a factor in nearly every sport.

Toledo's Courtney Moore went an extra step this year in athletics. Not only is she planning to play three sports through the school year (soccer, basketball and track), she was one of the first to participate as a cheerleader--and a sport--during the same season. She also scored 15 goals this fall as a member of the Toledo soccer team.
