Winlock High School junior Arianna Pennington has been crowned Miss Liberty by organizers of the Lewis County Veterans Day Parade and says she is looking forward to representing veterans' issues to her generation.
A young woman who has grown up around members of the military, she said it is her goal to help fellow students understand why Veterans Day is important and its intended impact on the community.
The Winlock School District says they are concerned about the public's perception of students in their APOLO alternative learning program, and are hoping to reach out to the community to benefit both residents and the students themselves.
Begun in 1996 as a chance for students low on graduation credits to make up their work, APOLO, short for Alternative Place of Learning Opportunities, has been the subject of scorn from residents who characterize the students as those most likely to get in trouble or cause problems.
About Veterans Day: first, it is only one of four official US holidays that fall on a specific date, Nov. 11. The others are the 4th of July, Christmas Day and New Years Day. Most of us in Ryderwood remember when the other holidays didn't fall on the closest Monday.
Second, the "11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918" was the date and time chosen for the Armistice that ended World War I. Veterans Day was designated a national holiday a year later by Woodrow Wilson. The holiday celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day remembers the men and women who died while serving.

The Vader Lions Club has decided they will place their regular wintertime fundraisers on hold in light of having recently sold the Vader Lions Hall. Normally the club organizes events such as Turkey Bingo and a Giving Tree, but these events will be on hiatus due to the continued renovations of the old building under its new ownership.

Since Veterans Day is this week, I thought it was time for a little history lesson about how it came to be. Armistice Day started on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of WWI. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance and became a national holiday beginning in 1938. In 1954, President Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975 President Ford returned Veterans Day to Nov. 11, due to the important historical significance of the date.
A state initiative mandating smaller classes sizes in K-12 education has seen a steady rise in support according to the most recent voting figures, though a significant number of ballots remain to be counted before final results can be declared.
Initiative 1351 was passing with 50.47 percent of voter support, or a margin of 17,702 votes, according to figures published this afternoon by the Washington Secretary of State's Office. But with an estimated 161,010 ballots yet to be counted throughout the state, analysts will be unable to declare its passage or failure until clearer results are reported in coming days.
Toledo has recognized City Clerk Michelle Whitten for 20 years of service to the community and presented her with a plaque during the city council's Nov. 3 meeting.
Having been hired in 1994, Whitten's 20 years with the city was described as being defined by "outstanding service and commitment," with officials stating they were grateful to have had her on staff.

Mitchell ran for five touchdowns as Winlock cruised to a 49-14 non-conference victory over Chief Leschi in Puyallup on Nov. 5. Mitchell ran for 362 all-purpose yards, including two fumble recoveries that were returned for scores.
Metal thieves target local rock quarry
A Vader-area rock quarry was burgled by an unknown number of metal thieves in recent weeks, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities are seeking help to solve a burglary taking place near Packwood earlier in the summer.
On Aug. 30, between noon and 12:15 p.m., an unknown number of suspects entered a shop building on the 800 block of Cannon Rd., north of Packwood, and stole two Honda 2000I generators portable generators with an estimated total value of $2,000.
What began as a house fire destroyed two buildings and threatened another in Vader yesterday morning, according to Cowlitz-Lewis Fire District 20.
The blaze broke out around 8:50 a.m. on the 800 block of A St. within the rear of a single-family residence and quickly spread to the rest of the house, according to District 20 Chief Rich Underdhal.
Authorities are seeking a pair of suspects connected with a robbery taking place at a Toledo man's home earlier this month , according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.
One of the suspects, Kyle E. Rogers, 33, of Winlock, was known to the victim, a 33-year-old Toledo man, who said Rogers entered the victim's home on the 400 block of SR 506, east of Vader, and demanded valuables from the residence under threat of bodily harm, and stole three laptop computers. Authorities are still seeking to identify a second male suspect whose role in the robbery has yet to be described.
Two sentences, one dismissal and two warrants were issued by Judge Steven Buzzard during Winlock Municipal Court on Thursday.
