Panama Canal temporarily blockaded by filling of channel

Colon, October 15, Tons of earth were piled in the newly completed channel of the Panama Canal today by a landslide in the Culebra cut. Dredges kept in anticipation of just such an emergency are removing the dirt. It will require at least 24 hours to clear the channel sufficiently for vessels to pass. Numerous minor slides have occurred recently, but today's was the first big one. There were simultaneous slides on both sides of the cut, the larger one occurring from Gold Hill, the highest elevation on the canal banks.
