Ryderwood Craft Fair coming up
The weekend after next, Ryderwood will be holding their 10th annual Arts and Crafts Fair on Oct. 17 and 18. There are more events in the works for this year to include a Quilt Show at Pioneer Hall, Live Music at the Cafe, and a "Cruisin'" Car show up and down the "Main Drag."
Members of the Toledo Presbyterian Church dedicate a new sign outside the church during their 125th anniversary on Sunday, celebrating the group's establishment in 1889. Interim Pastor Ron Naff said, though the sign indicates merely a physical establishment, it is given meaning through the service and activities of the congregation, further remarking he is impressed with how well-regarded he has found the church to be among local residents.
The Vader Lions Club has sold their Lions Hall to local businesswoman Judy Costello in light of ongoing concerns over their ability to continue paying for the facility's upkeep.
Located at 627 B St., Club President Richard Brice said the hall had been costing local Lions around $4,000 per year (the bulk of funds raised by the group annually) to maintain, on top of present needs for a new heat pump and refrigerator, as well as repairs to the exterior of the building.
Ron Schroeder took first place, Josh Norman took second place and Bret Zumbuhl took third place in the Horse Shoes Competition during this year's Octoberfest in Francis.

This will be a busy week for some of the ladies in town, what with the Women's Club luncheon at noon on Wednesday (dress up for Halloween!) and the Red Hat ladies Gathering at 2 p.m. on Thursday. Both groups "meet and greet" in Pioneer Hall. Some readers may not be aware that the building was originally the logging town's Infirmary. The Ryderwood Women's Club owns and maintains the building today.
This weekend has "Open Mic" at the Café on Saturday (7 p.m.) followed on Sunday by an Ice Cream Social (6 p.m.) and Card Bingo (6:30 p.m.) in Community Hall. The big winners at bingo bring cakes for the next time.

The Vader Park Board has replaced the door to the Historic City Jail after it was vandalized on May 25. Resident Andy Wilson has been credited with donating the new door, which was installed last Friday.
The Park Board is also selling Plush Pippen Pies in time for Thanksgiving. 12-inch pies are $6 and 9-inch pies are $5, with flavors including apple, berry and pumpkin. To place an order or check on availability, call Steve Krohn at (360) 880-6281.
Looking for a great place to have lunch in Winlock? Try the Olequa Senior Center, where you don't have to be in your golden years to enjoy a good meal and spend time in good company. The lunches take place at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $4 per person Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, with a suggested donation of $3 asked on Wednesday and Friday. As the bus bumped along to Old San Juan, swerving the occasional vehicles that dipped into the bus lane and halting abruptly every few minutes at the various stops, all around me locals chatted amongst each other, laughing at jokes and oo-ing and aw-ing over little babies. The familiar conversation and easy exchanges reminded me of home.

The City of Toledo has announced they expect to begin construction on their new water tower sometime in the middle of next year, likely when construction on their new wastewater treatment plant is drawing to a close.
Funding for the water tower upgrade has been made available through a $725,000 grant from the State Department of Commerce, which the city learned they had been awarded on Sept. 11, and the funding is expected to cover the entire cost of building a new water tower while also refurbishing the existing water tower.

Toledo jumped to a big lead and then Onalaska scored a defensive touchdown and two scores against the Indians back-up defenders to make the scoreboard look like a battle had taken place. The Indians forced six Logger turnovers while Taylor Hicks rumbled for 186 yards. Mason Gaul added 75 yards of rushing while QB Dalton Yoder connected seven passes for 178 yards. Grant McEwen was on the receiving end of 166 yards of passing and touchdown scores of 80 and 70 yards. Hicks had two TDs while Gaul opened the game with the first Indian score.
Authorities are investigating the death of a 3-year-old Vader boy after emergency responders were called to reports the child had stopped breathing on Sunday evening.
Responders from fire districts in Vader, Ryderwood, Winlock and Toledo, as well as the Lewis County Sheriff's Office, arrived at the 400 block of Main St. shortly after 5 p.m. and attempted to revive the child and transported him to Providence Centralia Hospital, where it was later reported he had died from causes described as "suspicious" by the Sheriff's Office.
Toledo man cited after Centralia crash
A Toledo man has been cited after causing a collision in Centralia on Sunday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.
The 57-year-old driver of a 1990 Toyota Camry had been traveling south on Centralia-Alpha Rd. when it is assumed he had fallen asleep and drifted into the oncoming lane and struck a 1997 Toyota Camry driver by a 78-year-old Centralia man.
Authorities are seeking help solving a burglary taking place near Chehalis back in August.
Sometime between 8 a.m. Aug. 13 and 3:20 p.m. Aug. 22, an unknown number of suspects entered a storage area on the 2500 block of Jackson Hwy., east of Chehalis, and stole diving gear (two masks, a regulator, a buoyancy compensator w/ regulator and fins), a Data Pro Drive computer, eight baseball gloves, assorted fishing lures and a Harley Davidson muffler. The estimated loss is more than $2,500.
Four warrants were issued by Judge Steven Buzzard during Winlock Municipal Court on Thursday.

Warrant served on J.J. Haggerty
A warrant was issued from Justice of the Peace J. T. Dorrien's office late last night for the arrest of J. J. Haggerty on a charge of receiving deposits at the Raymond Trust company bank after he had known the institution was insolvent. The warrant was sworn to by Oliver Lafave, and a second warrant was issued in South Bend today on the complaint of C. M. Burr, a resident of Firdale, charging the same offense.
