Local kindergarteners to third graders get the chance to enter their vegetables and flowers at the Pacific County Fair. In the category ranging from Kindergarten-to-third grade, children enter their items the way they want to and the surprises are enormous.

Ryderwood will be hosting their 6th annual Variety Show on Sunday, Sept. 14, and tickets are on sale now.

Among the acts featured this year will be "Sweet Swing!, an a cappella trio performing '40s hits and portraying the era-changing roles of women during the WWII years. Tickets are on sale for $8 in advance or $10 at the door. To place an order, or for more information, call Barb at (360) 903-0591.

USDA Washington Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director, Judy Olson, announced that, starting Sept. 2, farmers can enroll in the new dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP).

The voluntary program, established by the 2014 Farm Bill, provides financial assistance to participating farmers when the margin - the difference between the price of milk and feed costs - falls below the coverage level selected by the farmer.

The Toledo Community Library will be hosting a pair of guest speakers this Saturday as the first of regular special events to take place since the library's opening on Aug. 13.

Washington State Poet Laureate Elizabeth Austen and author Terry Martin will be speaking during a free event at the library starting at 7 p.m., and all members of the public are invited to attend.

Hi there! It's Becky, with another review for Books with Becky and Barb. I want to tell you about one of the best books I read this summer, "Say What You Will," by Cammie McGovern.

For her senior year in high school, Amy has decided to make a change. She convinces her protective mother that she needs practice becoming more independent, and that she can do without the adult aides who have always helped her at school. Because of cerebral palsy, Amy cannot walk without her walker or speak without her voice synthesizer. She is brilliant, but she has never had friends her own age. When Matthew, a classmate, challenges her claim to happiness toward the end of their junior year, she decides. No more adults. She wants her mother to hire peer helpers instead: classmates to help her from class to class, to sit with her at lunch. And she wants one of those peer helpers to be Matthew.

This is a busy week for the ladies in town with the Women's Club luncheon meeting at noon on Wednesday and a Red Hats gathering on Thursday at 2 p.m.

National Day of Service is this Saturday and volunteers are being sought to help with cleaning up McMurph Park and city streets. On Saturday, the Toledo Community Library will host an evening with Washington State Poet Laureate, Elizabeth Austen and author Terry Martin. The event is free and open to the public.

Timberland Regional Library will have their official Grand Opening of their Toledo Kiosk at the Toledo Community Library on Saturday Sept. 20.

Those who have been eager to continue helping with Clean Up the Coop will have a chance to do so again starting this month, after the program took a break for the summer. The next cleanup day is this Saturday and will continue on the second Saturdays of the month. Firewood enthusiasts, mark your calendars for Saturday, September 27th, as that's when Harold Strozyk, longtime logger and Raymond resident, will conduct a chainsaw safety class on his property at 386 South Fork Road.

Toledo officials have declined a request to build a county-managed oil recycling station within the city limits as efforts turn toward Winlock to seek a similar agreement.

Discussed during the Toledo City Council's Sept. 2 meeting, a request from Lewis County Public Works to have a collection station built on city property, possibly downtown near the intersection of Cowltiz St. and 3rd St., was voted down unanimously on the basis the facility may become an eyesore and a pollution hazard.

This Wednesday evening, the Vader City Council will be holding a public hearing regarding feedback on a temporary ban against recreational and medical marijuana facilities, passed by the council in July.

Scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, residents are invited to discuss whether or not they favor such a ban becoming permanent, with any changes in regulations potentially affecting a proposed marijuana production and processing facility at 747 Atlas Rd. on industrial property owned by Seattle-based developer Brandon Milton, which Milton anticipates utilizing along with fellow developers Jeff Carr, of Adan Farms, Anthony Bollibon and Jane Waite, of Growpro LLC, and Samir Breko, of Wagrown.

SOUTH BEND - At the 2014 Labor Day Celebration in South Bend as many visitors and residents partook in the many activities scattered around the town, two softball teams would meet for the final game to determine this years Champion.

We have three girls returning, who ran at state last year. All three may be running for Valley. Captain Jessica Cook seems ready. Teammate Dominique Kudasik is fresh from cross country camp and looks like she is ready for competition. Sophomore Traci Hoffman has transferred to Valley for academic reasons and also ready to go. Also for Valley, Senior Katie Daniel looks stronger than she has ever looked. If Valley rounds out a team with another girl, they may be a genuine team contender.

Estafaye and Bill Stephenson were added to the Rocket Stadium Hall of Fame. The number of inductees now total 71.

The Stephensons had two children who played sports but the youngest graduated in 1977. They have been attending Castle Rock athletic events in a dedicated fashion and are huge supporters of the athletic and school program.

Toledo 15 Morton/White Pass 14

A Toledo man was injured in a hit-and-run collision on I-5 earlier this month, according to the Washington State Patrol.

On Sept. 1, a 35-year-old man from Berlin, Germany, had been driving a 1993 Chevrolet Camper Van north near Milepost 79, in Chehalis, when he failed to stop for slowing traffic and struck the rear of a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by a 53-year-old Toledo man.

Authorities are seeking help solving a vehicle theft taking place earlier this summer.

Officials with Lewis County Fire District 15, based in Winlock, met with the Vader City Council Aug. 28 to clarify concerns regarding the future of ambulance service in the Vader and Ryderwood areas.

It has been stated recently by members of District 15, as well as Lewis County Fire District 2, in Toledo, that residents in Vader and Ryderwood should be asked to consider increasing property tax rates within Cowlitz-Lewis Fire District 20, serving those areas, so the district will be able to retain enough EMS personnel to maintain regular ambulance coverage.

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office has reported multiple local residents have been the targets of a scam involving thieves posing as IRS officers of computers technicians.

These scammers call potential victims and state they owe back taxes and will have a warrant issued for their arrest if they do not pay. Authorities caution the actual IRS does not operate by these protocols, and would not ask for payment over the phone.

One sentence and two warrants were issued by Judge Steven Buzzard during Winlock Municipal Court on Thursday.
