Police pulled over, evacuated, and searched a transit bus headed to Raymond Monday night (6 p.m.) after a distress signal was reported to 911.

Centralia College Child and Family Studies is offering Parenting in Recovery every Wednesday between July 2 and Aug. 20 at Fresh Start, in Morton.

This free class, taking place from 5–7:30 p.m., is designed for parents in substance abuse recovery, focusing on understanding the impact of substance abuse on family dynamics, rebuilding trusting relationships and renewing family bonds. Students will apply recovery principles to parenting while learning about their children’s developmental stages and age-appropriate expectations.

American Legion Post 101 is pleased to announce a special recognition recently bestowed on two local educators who exemplify the highest standards of teaching. Each has given above and beyond their normal teaching tasks to provide their students the best possible learning experiences.

The 2014 "Educator of the Year" award has been presented to Scott Merzoian, of Toledo Middle School, and Brian Demarest, of Winlock Middle School.

In the final hours leading up to Egg Days 2014, Dave Rubert and Sherri Kretz appeared to be at home in the chaos that was the Winlock Historical Museum.

The interior has taken on a significant facelift in recent months with volunteers Rubert, Kretz, Shelly Vogel, Paul Foster and Ann Rubert, among other supporters, spending many hours to prepare for the building’s 100th anniversary this year.

Toledo Elementary School Principal Lisa Hull has resigned to continue her career as an instructor, with district officials stating they plan to find a new administrator in time to prepare for the coming school year.

Having served with the Toledo School District since 2010, Hull had begun as the principal of Toledo High School and moved to the elementary school in 2012 after the resignation of former principal Ron Reynolds.

Runners, and walkers, are greeted at the finish line for I Topped the Rock on Saturday, an annual community fundraiser benefiting the Castle Rock PTO.

The Winlock Timberland Library welcomed back Scott Petersen, better known as The Reptile Man, to help kick off their summer reading program series on Thursday.

Owner of The Reptile Zoo in Monroe, Petersen has been a familiar face for Timberland libraries as well as local schools and children, said Library Manager Jamie Allwine.

A new scrap metal sculpture is on display in Toledo—the latest in a series of artworks crafted and contributed by local residents Victoria and Ron Smith. Installed May 31 during vision:Toledo’s annual Cleanup Day, the sculpture of a large salmon is located at the intersection of Cowlitz St. and 3rd St., and joins many other smaller sculptures located around town.

The Winlock Lions Club honored its outstanding members during their regular meeting at Guadalajara Family Mexican Restaurant Thursday night. Outgoing president Bob Giardina (pictured, far right) gave 20 certificates to members who had gone above and beyond in their contributions, and additionally honored three Lions of the Year: John Barton, Jeanie Emmenegger and Viola Chickese.

The Winlock School Board accepted the resignation of three long-serving teachers during their regular meeting June 18. Vickie Bell (left), who served 18 years, Audrey Dale (middle, left), who served 24 years, and Mike Voie (right), who served 27 years, were presented with plaques by Superintendent Shannon Criss (middle, right), who noted the three had instructed an estimated 8,000 students during their careers. “They have truly made a difference,” said Criss.

Winlock's annual community festival will be this weekend, and a number of activities have been planned for the public this Firday and Saturday.

Ryderwood’s first ever Sock Hop on Saturday afternoon was a wonderful success. DJ Steve Smith did a fine job of “spinning singles” from the ‘50s to a very appreciative dancing audience. While most of the audience was over 50+++, there were some kids and grandkids having a great time, too.

The line-dancing group got to show off their “steps” and there were some fine “bobby-soxer” outfits spotted including the proverbial pack of Camels rolled up in the sleeve of a white T-shirt. (He said it was the most expensive part of his attire!) The afternoon ended promptly at 5 p.m. for an incredible Potluck Dinner put on by the Social Club.

Have you picked your spot to spend the Fourth of July? Vader will be glad to include you in their big community celebration, which starts at 5 p.m. with a lawnmower parade, watermelon bust, games, vendors and more—and, of course, fireworks at dusk. More than $1,800 has been gathered toward the fireworks display, and all area residents are invited to attend. For more information, contact event organizer Judy Costello at (360) 295-3036.

This Wednesday will feature another free food giveaway by the Vader Assembly of God outside the post office and local residents are encouraged to come by and stock up breads, chips, produce and other items. This event takes place the last Wednesday of each month and is part of ongoing efforts by the church to minister to the community.

It’s here, it’s finally here, Egg Day is this weekend and I hope you are as excited as I am that it has finally arrived. A busy weekend is in store for Winlock, many people are in town for Egg Day. Since there is a big class reunion for some of the classes from the ‘50s and ‘60s, there will be even more people in town. It’s time for old classmates to catch up with each other. One of my Mom’s classmates came all the way from Cedar City, Utah over the weekend for the class reunion. For those of you who graduated in 1958, Jill Nichols and her adorable Yorkie Nute will be at the class reunion at Porters Patch.

Jennifer and I would like to thank everyone for the cards, flowers, food, visits, phone calls, prayers, love and support we received in the recent death of our beloved Husband and Dad, Scott Werden.

Special thanks to our wonderful family who were our anchors, Nathan and Colby Vermilyea who were right there when I needed them, the Toledo Fire Dept. and EMT’s, the wonderful Winlock Umpqua Bank ladies and the great Winlock “Class of ‘67” (I always knew our class was special). Everyone’s kindness has meant so much to us.

The Members of the Egg Day Committee wish to thank John Schaefer for putting up to street banners for our annual event. Also to the Lewis County PUD for the use of their line truck and donations of both their time and effort to advertise our festival.

Castle Rock has announced they expect to be featured in an upcoming edition of City Vision in recognition of the city’s ongoing restructuring efforts through community improvement projects.

A regular magazine published by the Association of Washington Cities, City Vision routinely highlights the accomplishments and goals of outstanding cities throughout the state, with local cities such as Toledo being featured in recent years after their recovery from a devastating downtown fire in late 2010.

The Toledo City Council is exploring the possibility of offering discounted rates to military veterans staying at Kemp Olson Memorial Park, while encouraging area business to offer discounts to general park guests.

Council Member James Fluckinger reported during the June 16 council meeting he feels the park is becoming a symbol for local veterans’ groups and supporters due to the establishment of the Veterans Wall of Honor within the park in 2012, and said offering discounts to such patrons would help further express the community’s appreciation.

A local driver was cited after running her van off the road near Winlock June 17, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.

The 31-year-old female driver of a 2008 Dodge Caravan had been traveling south on the 900 block of N Military Rd. when she reportedly turned around to secure a wheelchair behind the front seat and she drove into a ditch, colliding with a mail box.

Authorities are seeking help solving a theft taking place near Toledo April 30.

Sometime between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., an unknown number of suspects stole a flatbed trailer from the 2300 block of SR 505, east of Toledo, containing a 2006 John Deere 125 Riding Lawn Mower, serial number GX0125A015176. The trailer was recovered May 13 in Cowlitz County, but the mower is still missing. The estimated loss is $2,500.

A Castle Rock couple has opened a brand new shopping experience downtown, with the hope of sharing their appreciation for relics of the past.

Todd and Pam Luttrell opened Luttrell’s Five and Dime in April and say the public is welcome to look through the many collectibles on display.
