Ryderwood News 06.18.14

I must take some space here to report on the recent survival of a resident in Sudden Cardiac Arrest. This is where the “victim” collapses, is not responsive, and is not breathing. It is one of those “Golden Hour” situations where survival requires that all systems come together and mesh flawlessly.

Here are some of the pieces that came together to make this particular “Golden Hour” possible:

As Cheese Days 2014 draws near I mark progress in Toledo's rise from the ashes of the Christmas Day fire 2010. Other towns might not survive the aftershock. It's not the first time.

Vision:Toledo posted their first report of a pulse in February 2011. My arrival in March marked a new start for me as well. From locally grown libations and comestibles to the art scene, recovering and emerging businesses, Toledo has the heart of a champion. Both of us appear to be making progress with support from our community. Thank you. Visit www.visiontoledo.org/welcome for calendar and review of recent events. Vader News 06.18.14

It’s almost the Fourth of July and local residents are getting ready for this burgeoning community event. It was reported last week more than $1,800 has been raised for the fireworks display, while other events such as kids games and a lawnmower parade are being planned as well. Auditions are also going on for young people to sing the National Anthem, and those interested in giving it their best can call event organizer Judy Costello at (360) 295-3036.

Regrettably, this year’s Gravity Races, which had been scheduled to coincide with the Fourth of July celebration, has been cancelled due to a lack of available racers, and organizers are planning to give it another try next year. However, a new event has risen to take its place as Mayor Ken Smith has announced there will be a Watermelon Bust, which is scheduled for after the parade and featurs a seed-spitting contest.

With Egg Day right around the corner Winlock is definitely showing the signs of a festivity coming. The signs are up reminding us that Egg Day is June 27 and 28. The flower baskets are hanging and the town is getting geared up for the big weekend. As we all get ready to celebrate the big weekend, it’s important to remember those who volunteer their time to make the celebration happen. The amount of time the volunteers spend getting ready says a lot about the kind of people they are!

County closes shooting range after permit deadline passes

Failure to meet a special use permit deadline has led to the indefinite closure of the Cowlitz Public Shooting Range a little more than a year after the facility officially opened.

Announced June 10 during the Cowlitz County Commissioner’s meeting, the shooting range, located north of Castle Rock off Exit 52 on Toutle Park Rd., had been subject to a May 29 deadline to complete its second phase of construction, which involved building restrooms, a kitchen and classroom space in an enclosed building. By the time the deadline approached, Phase II was reportedly 10 working days away from completion, and construction was shut down May 30.
