Gallery 505 and the Morgan Arts Centre are pleased to announce the winners of the People’s Choice Award for the 2014 Battle of the CowlArtz.

An annual celebration of artistic talent by local high school students, Battle of the CowlArtz features a wide range of art projects by students from Winlock and Toledo High Schools in a number of different media.

Toledo resident Pauline Pedersen would like to thank community members for their support during a fundraiser held May 3 to help with hospital expenses related to the recent passing of her husband, Ron Pedersen.

Supporters had organized a silent auction and benefit dinner at the Toledo Senior Center, and Pedersen said she is very appreciative of the support shown by the Toledo community. The Winlock FFA Chapter held their 79th annual Winlock FFA Banquet May 22. More than 100 members, parents and guests enjoyed a steak dinner sponsored by the Winlock FFA Alumni, with special thanks to Winlock Cedar Village IGA.

The Winlock Lions Club is looking for a few good community leaders—20, to be exact—for the creation of a new Lions Club in neighboring Napavine, with efforts planned to take off during the summer.

Winlock Lions Club President Bob Giardina, who is helping lead efforts to create the new club, said a growing group of business people and officials in the Napavine area have expressed interest in the creation of a club, and Winlock has agreed to offer their official sponsorship as Guiding Lions to help them get started.

Happy June, everyone! Everything in Town looks fantastic! Some of the rhodies have peaked while others are just coming on. They are just glorious with an incredible array of colors.

Other signs of spring include: flocks of goldfinches, many varieties of swallows, hummers zipping around, and young deer roaming around Town. This is mostly a group of juveniles (and elderly) who have been run out of the woods while the mommas are bringing the next generation into the world. This is the only time of year when I’ve ever seen young males with their furry 1- and 2-point prongs in town.

The Country Cruisers Car Club will he hosting their spring car show for this Saturday at McMurphy Park, and food and events are expected for the whole family, including performances by The Randy Band. The first of three limb disposal days has been scheduled for Saturday, and local residents can dispose of old tree limbs for free. This event will be at the Vader Sewer Plant (1025 A St.), and residents are advised no logs, grass, leave or garbage will be accepted.

At the end of May, we always celebrate Memorial Day. My family always does a BBQ, we of course have smores as well. This year I did not make it to my Grandmothers grave on Memorial Day since she lived in Seattle but I did make it a few days later. There is nothing like knowing you have had someone in your life that meant so much to you. She passed away in 2000 and I have tried to each year around Memorial Day take flowers to her.

The City of Winlock has significantly decreased the payment timeline for outstanding water and sewer bills, as new regulations require full payment within one week after the due date before services are shut off.

This system, approved by the City Council during their May 27 meeting, takes the place of a previous timeline where a utility customer had roughly one month after the due date to settle outstanding bills before services were denied.

Local athletes were invited to travel to Cheney for the WIAA State Track & Field Championships this last weekend. Only Winlock's Chance Fisher and Castle Rock's Zac Akesson managed to place, but the state meet experience will leave an imprint on all of the local participants.

"I didn't do as good as I wanted but it was a lot of fun and a great experience," said Castle Rock senior Joe Merrill, who placed 14th in the discus with throws well off his personal best. "It's something I'll never forget and a memory that I can cherish."

Winlock high School student Jared Pohll (center) runs a ceremonial torch for the Special Olympics out of the high school Thursday morning. The run, which serves as a fundraiser by the Centralia Police Department, begins in Winlock and spans multiple locations throughout Lewis County, ending at Thorbeckes, in Centralia.

A Winlock man has been arrested after allegedly vandalizing his estranged wife’s vehicle Saturday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

Corey M. Ming, 37, was arrested after he reportedly punctured the wife of his estranged 40-year-old wife’s car on the 100 block of Nelson Rd.

The namesake of her grandparent’s plantation in Tennessee, Shelton said Touch of Wheatlands is intended to provide local residents with the experience of visiting an old country store while providing produce grown all around the region.
