The first phase of a beautification project to transform Castle Rock’s storm water retention pond into a wildlife habitat will be taking place this Saturday thanks to volunteers with Cowlitz County AmeriCorps.

Known locally as Jackson Hole, the retention pond, located on Jackson St. near Cascade Select Market, currently serves as the final destination for water and debris running through the city’s stormwater system. But community activists say they feel it could also serve the city was an educational and artistic centerpiece, and are hoping AmeriCorps will help begin that transformation this weekend.

It’s not uncommon for students in rural schools to learn the basics of caring for livestock, but it’s easy to forget that some working animals don’t fit in a saddle or yoke.

Enter Dr. Tomme Trikosko, a science instructor for Toledo who introduced an animal husbandry course for this school year. Trikosko included beekeeping on the roster of subjects, and said she was surprised by the unexpected interest students took in the course.

The Winlock Cleanup Committee will be spreading their efforts outside the downtown core April 12 as they plan to tackle a number of landscaping and beautification projects.

Their focus for April’s Clean Up the Coop event will be the exterior of Winlock’s Community Building, an embankment along SR 505 by Guadalajara Family Mexican Restaurant, and the replacement of aging flower barrels on the sidewalks along First. St.

Grays Harbor College will be hosting an Earth Fair from 3 to 7 pm on Tuesday, April 22, at the Riverview Education Center, 600 Washington Street, Raymond.

The Kiwanis Club of Raymond will give two $500 scholorships to graduating students from Raymond or Willapa Valley High Schools.

Willapa Valley Middle School seventh graders' plans for sunflower houses will highlight the April 16 meeting of the Raymond Kiwanis. Darlene Smith will present student proposals for sunflower houses at Holcomb Farms.

Saturday evening is the next Open Mike. There has been a pretty good group showing up every couple of weeks. Now that it stays light later, it's a pleasant drive out to Ryderwood on a nice evening.

The city is still excited for the upcoming May Day festival on May 3, less than a month away. This week is National Volunteer week and Winlock has a large group of individuals who volunteer a lot of their time to make Winlock a better community. Thank you to all of the volunteers for making Winlock a desirable community for all.

Since it is National Volunteer Week, I couldn’t think of a better person to interview than Joann Parkinson. Joann and Gary have been in Winlock since 1965. They are wonderful people who give a lot of their time to the Winlock Olequa Senior Center.

Lewis County Public Health & Social Services (PHSS) is hoping to create a Community Health Improvement Plan and area residents are being asked to help by rating their health concerns both locally and personally.

Part of a statewide trend, a Community Health Improvement Plan, or CHIP, is intended to identify those with health needs and connect them with local organizations who can meet those needs, according to PHSS Community Services Manager John Abplanalp.

Two warrants were issued by Judge Steven Buzzard during Winlock Municipal Court on Thursday.

Two $2,500 warrants were issued for the arrest of Juan C. Rosario, 35, of East Wenatchee, after failing to appear for arraignment. Rosario is being charged with driving while license suspended, third degree, and making a false statement to a public servant.

A Winlock man has died after a collision on I-5 near Napavine April 1, according to the Washington State Patrol.

John R Boyer, 62, had been traveling northbound on I-5 near Exit 72 when he suddenly ran off the road and struck the guardrail with his 1991 Ford Ranger, and then crossed the center line and struck the jersey barrier, coming to rest in the left lane.
