South Bend school cooks Julie Dokter and Debbie Williams serve up some of the delicious chili that was available at this year's Second Annual Kiwanis of South Bend Chili Cook-off at Chauncey Davis Elementary last weekend. Dokter and Williams were last year's champions, but had to relinquish their crowns to the the Pacific County 4-H cooks and the Raymond Fire Department who narrowly tied for top honors this year. Proceeds from the event go towards local scholarships.

Willapa Valley's girls won the six-team Naselle Invitational while the boys place fourth.

It was a pretty good day for the first time out,” Willapa Valley HS Head Track and Field Coach Dave Ege told the Herald. “I thought our kids competed very
well. The weather wasn't too bad by early season standards for western Washington. The girls pulled off the win with 193 points. We have decent depth with our girls this year.

SOUTH BEND – The start of spring sports got underway in South Bend as the Indians played host to the Pacific League track and field opener on March 20. A total of nine high school 1A and 2B teams took to the afternoon sun.

Sheriff reports string of Honda thefts in Vader

An unknown number of vehicle thieves appear to be targeting older Hondas in Vader after a third car in as many weeks has been reported stolen by authorities.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office has reported a 1993 Honda Civic was stolen sometime between 6 p.m. March 23 and 6 a.m. March 24 from the 900 block of B St., joining a string of thefts including a 1993 Honda Prelude stolen from the 900 block of D St. on March 14, and a 1992 Honda Accord stolen from the 900 block of 10th St. on March 6.
