Board of Trustees name college’s science​ center

Centralia College’s newest and one of the two largest buildings on campus is now named in honor of Dr. Jim Walton, current president of the college.

The action took place during the Wednesday, Feb. 19, meeting of the Centralia College Board of Trustees, held on the college campus.

Community Announcements 02.26.14

The Winlock Lions Club will be honoring some of its longest-serving members in a special ceremony Thursday evening at the Winlock Community Building.

Scheduled for 6 p.m., the ceremony will feature recognition of 40-year member and long-time coordinator of the Winlock/Vader Food Bank Stan Taloff, as well as 50-year member and local optometrist Dr. C. Y. Wong.

Foreign filmmaker takes awards at PIFF

Foreign films fared well on top of local favorites during the tenth-annual Plomondon Independent Film Festival last weekend in Toledo.

The first such festival to include international submissions, organizer Mike Morgan said he was pleased to be able to share movies from Japan, France, Ireland and Turkey with festival-goers among the 17 entries screened this year.

Murder Mystery unfol​ds at dinner theatre

The Rose Room Murder Mystery a dinner/theatre production, promises to be an evening of fun and intrigue. Join the entertaining action on Friday, March 7, from 6-10 p.m., at the Historic Washington Hotel in Chehalis, where you will be a part of the thinking-person’s mystery.

The Rose Room Murder Mystery takes place in a real speakeasy, where guests, or should we say suspects, will enjoy a dinner catered by Mackinaws, period cocktails (or contemporary beer and wine) from a no-host bar, plus a drama that includes a murder, and an opportunity for you to guess “who done it.” You will also have a chance to win a spectacular grand prize.

As the shortest month of the year comes to a close, it means the next VFW Town Breakfast is coming up soon. That will be this Saturday morning, March 1, from 8-10 a.m. They have expanded the menu a bit and now you can get sausage or ham with your meal. The same great biscuits and gravy, pancakes, eggs how you like ‘em – orange juice and bottomless coffee are always included.

Winlock News 02.26.14

This week, in the “Get to Know Ya” series, I am blessed to have interviewed Duane Bryant, a member of the Winlock School Board and owner of Bryant Auto Sales in Centralia. He is a great guy I have known for many years. Duane and I go back to when I was 19 years old. There have been times we haven’t talked for a long time but when we do, it’s like we never skipped a beat. He always is there to listen and he can tell a story or two. I enjoy every conversation we have had because it brings back a lot of fun memories, especially that trip to the beach! Here is my interview with Duane:

Betty Allen, of Toledo, died Feb. 14, 2014. Born in Oct. 17, 1930, she was 83 years old.

She was preceded in death by husband Cliff Allen, brothers Dan Sparks and Max parks, and granddaughter Katie.

Olaf Klueck, of Toledo, died Dec. 22, 2013. Born July 5, 1939, he was 74 years old.

He was preceded in death by siblings Lolie Holt and Herbert Klueck.

Green seeking appointment back to City Council

Former Winlock City Council Member Denise Green has asked to be given her old position back after resigning abruptly on Feb. 11.

Mayor Lonnie J. Dowell told the city council Monday night Green had been among four applicants seeking to fill the vacated position, with the other three being former mayor Don Bradshaw, former mayor Glen Cook, and resident Sarah Gifford.

Newton accuses Vader leadership of practicing preferential politics

After resigning from the Vader City Council Feb. 13, former council member Linda Newton has described what she feels is an attitude of cronyism and back-door policy-making within City Hall as her reasons for stepping down.

First appointed last March to fill a vacancy created when former council member Lois Wilson resigned, Newton said she had begun to see what she felt were unilateral policy decisions being made without regard for those with differing opinions, causing her to feel uncomfortable remaining on the council.

Pratt running for County Commission

Toledo Mayor Jerry Pratt has announced his bid for a seat on the Lewis County Commission and said he hopes he can bring his 12 years of experience in small-town leadership to the rest of the county.

Having served initially as a Toledo city council member in 2002, he was elected to the first of three mayoral terms in 2004 and said he originally became involved in civic leadership out of an interest in supporting his community.

Toledo receives favorable bids for WWTP

Bids for the construction of Toledo’s new wastewater treatment plant  have come in at around $300,000 less than estimated, and an official bid is expected to be approved next week.

Rotschy Inc., based in Vancouver, submitted a bid of $7.46 million on Thursday, coming in lowest of 11 bidders that day, of which the second lowest had been Pease and Sons at $8 million.

CR and Winlock done with season

Castle Rock placed five wrestlers while a Winlock senior took a third place medal home from the WIAA State Wrestling Championship in Tacoma.

Winlock’s Tony Raupp battled to a third-place finish in the 132 pound weight class. Castle Rock senior Chase Lam finished fourth in the 1A 182 pound class while Shawn Godinho took home fifth place at 145. Casron Horton grabbed seventh in the 126 pound category and Nathon Carroll earned eight place in the 1A 132 pound bracket. As a team,

Castle Rock finished 16th place at the 1A level.

Toledo takes second consecutive District IV title

For the second year in a row, the Toledo Indian basketball team won the District IV 1A Championship with a thrilling 60-58 victory over Woodland, hinging on an accurate pass by an established star and a clutch shot by an upcoming sophomore named Colby Vermilyea .

Yes, that said sophomore. Two freshmen, Gabe Fuentes and Joe Wallace, played significant minutes on a team that has been a study in progress. The team is made up of a covey of juniors and only senior Kreed Askin saw significant playing time through the season.

Lewis County Fire District 15 welcomes Kistler as new commissioner

Lewis County Fire District 15 has a new commissioner who has been no stranger to local emergency responders.

Grant Kistler, who moved to the Winlock area with wife Terri in 2009, was elected in November when long-time commissioner Lindsay Chatterton declined to seek re-election, and Kistler said he is fortunate to be serving wither other experienced commissioners who can help him learn the ropes.

Toledo honors 2013’s top responders

Lewis County Fire District 2, based in Toledo, celebrated the service of their firefighters and EMTs during an annual dinner at Parker’s Restaurant Saturday in Castle Rock. Honored for a high volume of call responses were (pictured, left to right) Shawnee Bunyard, who responded to 105 calls, Nathan Summers, who responded to 117 calls, Shannon Summers, who responded to 244 calls, and Nick Delin, who responded to 214 calls.
