The Friends of the Castle Rock Library will be holding their regular book sale Jan. 24 and 25, and residents from all over the area are invited to come and support this vital fundraiser.

Taking place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, the sale will feature a number of books and movies at reasonable prices, all of which are being sold to support the ongoing activities of the Friends program. Hardcover books will be $0.50 each, paperback books will be $0.25 each, children’s books will be $0.10 each, DVDs will be $0.50 each and VHS will be $0.25 each.

The deadline to participate in the Plomondon Independent Film Festival is mere weeks away and those wishing to submit a video must do so by Feb. 3.

Film Festival, currently in its tenth year, is geared toward all styles and genres of independent filmmaking, and is planning to go international this year with the possible addition of movies originating from Germany and Japan.

Three men originating from Lewis County who set out on a cross-country bike ride this summer have returned from a successful trip and are planning to have a video of their experience completed in the coming months.

But their journey was not simply about traveling across the United States. They were hoping to raise awareness of human trafficking, and their encounters with victims, as well as interviews with advocates, are expected to be a significant part of the documentary.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office Association is helping support and get the word out about a program for kids in Onalaska. It is called the Backpack Snack Program and is to help needy K-8 school kids have food to eat over the weekend when they are not at school where food is available to them.

Each qualifying child will receive a backpack filled with snacks and food on Friday to take home. On Monday, they return it to school to be filled up again the following Friday. 

Happy middle of January everyone – how gray can it be, anyway? I heard a great saying the other day that speaks to my mood: “I’m at the corner of Pork Place and Bored Walk”. Weather-wise, we haven’t been hit with the snow and frigid temperatures experienced elsewhere, but we did have a power outage with the high winds over the weekend.

I didn’t think it could happen so fast, but the new flooring was installed in the back half of the Café and we didn’t miss a single dinner. The new vinyl laminate floor looks wonderful and will be a breeze to keep clean. The rest of the building will be done after some funds are raised for it.

Brandi Devine says: Toledo has officially gained it’s own distillery! Cowlitz River Distillery, owned by Cindy and Chad Robins, is located off Jackson Hwy. and will be shelving Toledo Market Fresh with their product. They began making distilled spirits in 2011 and finally have a product that competes with those made during the glory days of moonshine. Their moonshine is made from Washington State Corn, and they are currently working on labeling their very own vodka as well. Sheila Richardson says: Congratulations to Tammy Zuber, who won the iPad Mini playing ToledoTel’s 30 Days of Toledo Trivia Facebook contest! A trivia question was posted every morning for 30 days in December and correct answers were entered in a drawing. Thanks to all participants. We had a lot of fun, and everyone learned something new about Toledo. Reminder: Open House Jan. 28 in our newly remodeled Plomondon Rd. offices, featuring Wheel of Give Aways, fantastic prizes all day long, plus coffee and donuts.

We are now firmly planted into 2014; is the New Year treating you well?  I decided I would take more time to learn the history of Winlock this year. One of the ways I enjoy learning about Winlock is via the Internet, especially Facebook. Facebook has different pages for Winlock; Egg Day, The Firehouse and my favorite is “You know you are from Winlock when…” If you haven’t taken the time to look, I recommend you do. There are old photos and stories, the kind that make you go “Awww”.  

Cecilia Swinney (Rarey) just celebrated her 100th birthday at the Winlock Senior Center.  I was unable to attend but my parents (who just celebrated 55 yrs of marriage on Dec. 31) were there and said her family gave her a nice party. Cecilia was a resident of St. Urban for many years and raised her family there.  

The Vader City Council has struck down an ordinance allowing marijuana in its industrial zone and is seeking more restrictive regulations intended to limit the number of recreational marijuana facilities in town.

As of Jan. 7, the State Liquor Control Board has reported four individuals are applying for a total of eight production license and two processing licenses within Vader’s industrial district, a 28.74-acre tract of under-developed land owned by Seattle developer Brandon Milton’s company, MPM.

After a nearly flawless first half and a hot shooting display by Brock Johnson, Castle Rock Head Basketball Coach Kevin Johnson was feeling pretty good about his team's position in the A Trico League after Tuesday's convincing 54-34 victory over Toledo.

"I don't think our record is indicative of how well we have played," said the coach. "I am telling you—our schedule has been brutal. We played Naches (Valley) and they are a state tournament level team. We played LaSalle at the (Yakima) Sundome and lost both of those.  We also lost to La Center, Woodland and Kalama, so there is not a lot of shame in that. I was looking up some numbers and we have five losses against teams that are 148 and 5."

The Winlock Lions Club has announced the 2013 recipient of the Otis Roundtree Award for outstanding performance and leadership on the Winlock High School football team.

Senior J.W. Shipman had been presented the award in Nov. 30 and joins a long list of recipients dating back to 1928. Winners are selected by a secret ballot supervised by the Lions Club, and receive a personalized plaque as well as their name engraved on a perpetual trophy at the high school.
