Toledo’s Lewis County Fire District 2 would like to thank community members for their support during a recent Christmas tree fundraiser.

The district had been selling 100 pre-cut trees to benefit their activities and were sold out by the weekend of Dec.14. District 2 continues to serve the community through fire and EMS response and is able to do so in large part through volunteers, donations and fundraisers.

Librarians at the Winlock Timberland libraries have some end-of-year fun up their sleeves for children.

Magician Jeff Evans will present his Holiday Magic show at the library Friday at 2 p.m.

A US flag flown over Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, over 526 En Company, 92nd Battalion spaces between March and November, 2013, has been donated to American Legion Post 71 by 1st Sgt. Raymond McFarlane, a charter member of the post.

During their last deployment to Afghanistan, the Company was adopted by Post 71 and received numerous packages of personal care items, snacks, powdered drink mixes, etc. This was the Company’s way of thanking the Post for its thoughtfulness and generosity.

Toledo High School is accepting applications for a Youth in Beekeeping Scholarship now through Jan. 7.

The scholarship will be applied to upcoming workshops by the Lewis County Beekeeper’s Association and will include supplies and a colony so a student may keep bees at their own home.

Even though Winter is officially here, the days are really getting a wee bit longer every day. Take advantage of any sunshine available (indoor lighting works, too) and take plenty of Vitamin D.

There will be a candlelight service at Ryderwood’s Community Church at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve with refreshments to follow. It is such a lovely church and it’s all dressed up for the Season. All are invited to share.

Christmas time is upon us and, as we celebrate the holidays with our family and loved ones, we also say goodbye to a Winlock institution. After many years in the community, Sacred Heart Catholic Church will be closing their doors at the end of the month. For those of us who grew up with the many parishioners who attended mass, we can’t help but think about the people who have been helped by the church. It also gave those of us who were not Catholic the opportunity to see the church in all it’s glory. I remember going to Christmas Mass one year and being in awe of the service, the Priest gave a message about Christmas I will never forget. Thank you Sacred Heart Catholic Church for not only being a part of Winlock but also for taking care of the many citizen of our community.

A Level III sex offender has moved into the Vader area and residents are being notified due to a possible risk to the community.

Timothy J. Lesch, a 29-year-old formerly of Thurston County, has moved to the 400 block of Main St., in Vader, and is not wanted by law enforcement at this time but is believed to possess a high likelihood to re-offend due to the nature of his previous convictions.

The Lewis County Medic One Interlocal Board took time out of its Dec. 17 meeting to honor the career of retiring firefighter Lindsay Chatterton, who has served for 52 years in local fire districts.

A founding member of Medic One back in the early 1990s, Chatterton has served with Lewis County Dire District 15, based in Winlock, since 1989, and had previously been part of the Kelso Fire Department since 1961.

One sentence and two warrants were issued by Judge Steven Buzzard during Winlock Municipal Court Thursday.
