Law firm retained to fight Tokeland project

 

Editor’s Note: Following is a letter to the PUD No. 2 Commissioners about retaining a law firm concerning the Tokeland project from a group that calls themselves the Concerned PUD #2 Rate Payers. NASELLE – At 6:30 a.m. last Thursday, all of Willapa Valley, from the weigh station on Route 6 outside of Menlo, and east to the Pacific County line, lost power when a 115Kv transmission line located approximately miles outside of Naselle, severed due to unknown reasons.

Winlock student wins big at State Fair
Winlock student wins big at State Fair

12-year-old Winlock resident 4-H student Sable Pirtle took home several awards at the Washington State Fair last month, adding to the more than 100 ribbons she has taken home during the 2013 season. Pirtle (pictured above with one of her prize-winning goats) was declared Champion in categories for Alpine Doe, La Mancha Doe, Pack Goat Wether, Individual Oral Reasons, and Reserve Champion in the Dairy Goat Fit & Show.

Blue Array accuses Department of Ecology of favoritism and bid-rigging

Blue Array has filed complaints of ethics violations against the Department of Ecology (DOE) for what they claim have been deliberate efforts to undermine the Vader-based company while allegedly colluding with Blue Array’s competitors.

Filed Sept. 8, the complaint lists a total of 19 specific claims Blue Array co-owners James Reilly and Victoria Jelderks feel have violated state laws prohibiting the use of public resources for personal benefit.

Developer pitching Vader marijuana production facility

Seattle developer Brandon Milton has begun the process of receiving approval for a marijuana production facility in Vader, to take advantage of the state’s distribution of recreational marijuana starting next year.

Milton has reportedly been speaking one-on-one with members of the Vader City Council during the last week to inform them of his intent, and said he hopes it would be a source of industry for the city at a time when few businesses are located in town.

Hearing scheduled for plans to develop Winlock Industrial Park

The Winlock Planning Commission is seeking public input on the development of the Winlock Industrial Park as developers are preparing to take official steps to begin construction.

Located on N. Military Rd. between Winlock High School and I-5, efforts have been made to develop the area since 2008, with Lewis County Commissioners offering strong support as the location is far above the Chehalis River Basin and would not be shut down in the event of a large flood, such as those that have plagued the Chehalis and Centralia areas in recent years.

Improvement Committee invites public to meetings

The Vader Improvement Committee would like to invite members of the public to their next regular meeting, scheduled for Oct.16 at 4 p.m. in City Hall.

The Committee, made of three appointees chosen from the community, has been charged with documenting nuisance violations reported to City Hall and issuing infractions to those found out of compliance.

Vader funding snag hindering industrial development

Efforts to develop Vader’s industrial zone have hit a roadblock after a request for an economic development grant was denied last month.

Mayor Ken Smith reported during the Oct. 1 Vader City Council Meeting a request for $178,000 from Lewis County for the installation of utility lines through under-developed industrial property west of town was turned down on the grounds the request seemed too high for the nature of the project, with officials stating an itemized engineering report was also needed.

South Bend edged Willapa Valley in a close 4-game volleyball contest 25-20, 25-20, 18-25 and 26-24 Thursday at Koplitz Field House. The Lady Indians trailed 24-19 in the fourth game before reeling off 7 straight points for the victory. Emily Sanchez served up 7 straight points.

Pe Ell stunned Willapa Valley 26-7 Friday night at Crogstad Field in Menlo to put a dark cloud over the homecoming celebration. The Vikings were held to a season-low 74 yards rushing.

Castle Rock Earns Advantage with Victory Over Toledo/Winlock

It took less than a minute in Thursday night’s 1A Trico League soccer match for Toledo/Winlock to realize that they were playing with fire. In the end, Castle Rock sent T/W to their bus with a 3-0 defeat.

In years passed, United has dominated neighboring Castle Rock, but this year Coach Brian Ziese has brought lawlessness to a United community.

Toledo fell behind quickly but came back to defeat the Cougars in a 1A Trico League battle in Vancouver.

Taylor Hicks ran for two touchdowns and caught two more in the victory which puts the Indians all alone in third place in the Trico League. Hicks rushed for 157 yards and caught four passes for 98 yards. Toledo's fifth score came on a 70-yard kickoff return by Dakota Robins.

Crime and Injury Report 10.09.13

A Toledo woman escaped injury when her vehicle rolled over near Winlock Oct. 2, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

The 29-year-old driver of a Toyota 4Runner had been traveling on the 20 block of S. Military Rd., east of Winlock, when she lost control and ran into a ditch, at which time the vehicle rolled onto it’s top. No injuries or citations were reported in connection with the collision.

Whitson pleads not guilty to charges of child rape

Accused pedophile Michael D. Whitson pleaded not guilty to four counts of second-degree child rape Thursday in Lewis County Superior Court and is scheduled to go to trial the week of Dec. 16.

Whitson, 51, formerly of Winlock and now living in Vancouver, has been accused of initiating a sexual relationship in 2002 with a then-12-year-old male victim while Whitson was serving as the youth pastor at Winlock Assembly of God.

Albee, Kelly arrested

Bruce W. Albee, age 56, was placed under arrest by Pacific County Sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of homicide and vehicle theft.

 

Debra Kelly was booked into the Pacific County Jail on one count of possession of methamphetamine, several counts of delivery of methamphetamine and for using a building for drug purposes. Kelly’s bail has been set at 200,000.00.

Healthy tips to help men live longer

One truism of most modern Western societies is that men die at higher rates than women for all the top ten causes of death, as compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Perhaps it should come as no surprise then that - on average - men also tend to die younger than women. Are men "stuck" because of their genetics, or can they take steps that will help them to be healthier?

The good news is many of the top causes of death and disease are preventable - and they can be treated proactively if they are discovered soon enough.

Recent weather contributing to strong wildlife turnout for hunters

Some of Washington's most popular hunting seasons get under way in October, when hunters take to the field for deer, elk, ducks, geese and other game birds. Tens of thousands of hunters are expected to pursue deer during the modern-firearms season that begins Oct. 12 in areas throughout the state.

Dave Ware, game manager for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), said he expects that season - and others coming up this month - to be a good one.
