2013 Gravity Races sees new class of downhill derby cars

The 2013 Gravity Races in Vader saw a new category of vehicle: the experimental cars, which proved to be some of the flashiest and fastest cars of the day.

Classified separately from the regular racers because they do not meet specific downhill derby guidelines, the experimental cars came in a variety of shapes and sizes, including a lean, three-wheeled speedster built by Ryderwood resident Ray Finch.

Car show survives Mountain Mania hiatus
Car show survives Mountain Mania hiatus

Many of the events associated with Castle Rock's Mountain Mania were canceled due to ongoing construction in downtown Castle Rock, but the annual car show continued to thrive.

This year's show brought about 70 cars to the newly-reinvented CR city center. Organizer Jim Grose said the turn out, although less than last year's 90 cars, was pretty good considering car shows in Puyallup, Yakima and near-by Chehalis were all taking a bite of the available exhibitors.

Ryderwood News 07.31.13

As this dry spell continues, please use extreme caution with anything that has to do with fire. That means everything from the slightest flicker to cigarette butts for open flames. Everything is tinder dry. There is a Burn Ban in effect which means there are certain restrictions on outdoor burning. Common sense should tell us that this is not a good time to burn a pile of brush, and it’s also against the law. If you have any doubts, check the rules on the Internet.

The start of a new month means one thing for certain: it’s time for Ryderwood’s special monthly Town Breakfast this Saturday. The VFW guys put on a complete spread that includes everything from pancakes, ham, eggs how you like ‘em, biscuits and sausage gravy, orange juice and bottomless coffee. This is a major fund-raising event for the VFW who contributes so much to the community.

CR Exhibit Hall facing serious budget challenges as tourism income keeps falling

A steady decrease in tax revenues has led Castle Rock officials to make some tough decisions regarding the funding of the city’s Exhibit Hall.

Though income through hotel/motel taxes collected at local tourism venues had once been enough to cover the cost of an Exhibit Hall Director and portions of insurance and telephone services, City Council members have had to dip into the city’s general fund to cover such expenses, voting during their July 22 meeting to expend $6,175.54 out of Castle Rock’s general fund to pay for the Exhibit Hall’s insurance.

Toledo clinic on track for completion in Oct.
Toledo clinic on track for completion in Oct.

Employees of Valley View Health Center's Toledo clinic took a walkthrough Friday of their new location as it undergoes construction at the corner of Augustus St. and Ramsey Way. The foundation of the building as well as the installation of utilities have recently been completed and the frame of the building itself is on its way up. As the facility is nearing the interior construction phase, the employees with Valley View met with contractors to make sure all necessary accommodations, such as the locations of exits, wheelchair ramps and private examination rooms, are accounted for in the floor plan. Officials report they still plan to have the clinic completed by Oct. 25 and open for patients the following week.
