Morgan Arts Centre Gives the Arts to Big Brothers Big Sisters

The Morgan Arts Centre is active in the local community, hosting classes and local events, but on Thursday, it played host to a special group of kids. Six matches from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington traveled to Toledo on Thursday night to participate in a ceramics class taught by Mike Morgan. The event was also sponsored by Trans-Alta.

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches adults and teens with younger children to provide one-on-one mentoring. In south Lewis County, five school districts participate in the program with high school BIGs and LITTLEs from the elementary or middle school in each district. The matches meet once a week during the school year and several times during the summer at events organized by the local coordinator.

Spectators pack town for ‘Great Eggscape’ in Winlock
Spectators pack town for ‘Great Eggscape’ in Winlock

Impending downpours were saved until the day after the 77th Egg Day Parade this year, much to the delight of more than 1,000 spectators in attendance last Saturday.

Themed “The Great Eggscape,” this year’s festivities were led by Grand Marshals Raleigh and Pam Stone, as well as Egg Day Queen Sophie Randall and Egg Day Princess Sydney Gilreath. The parade lasted well more than an hour with its dozens of entries, being stopped a handful of times by passing freight and passenger trains. This seemed to dull no-one’s excitement as candy and cheers kept flowing.

Winlock preparing to vote on fees for athletics

The Winlock School District Board is preparing to vote on a $50 pay-to-participate fee in an effort to help stem large financial losses in their athletics programs.

The fee would be per student and per sport (so a single student playing three sports during the school year would be charged $150) and would be expected to generate at least half of the roughly $26,000 in yearly athletics expenses not currently covered by ticket sales and fundraisers.

Ryderwood News 06.26.13

I guess "Supermoons" are optical illusions, but I think all full moons are pretty special. Is that something I should admit? I was in a kayak once as the "harvest moon" rose over a flat roof building – I thought it was the biggest pumpkin decoration I’d ever seen!

If the beginning of summer is measured by signs of a new generation of wildlife, then it’s here. I’m starting to see squirrels running around, a pesky raccoon scout and the first baby fawn walked by our house twice the other day. That fawn was all legs and the darkest I’ve ever seen – I’m sure it didn’t weigh as much as the ‘coon!

Congratulations are in order for 17-year-old Sophie Randall, who is now officially our Egg Day Queen. You’ve got quite a legacy to uphold, and I have every confidence that you will succeed. Also, I’d like to thank all the people in the parade, the volunteers, the vendors, and the many other individuals that made last week’s Egg Day so spectacular. It was all so wonderful.

The Hope Grange’s monthly meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 2. There will be a potluck at 6 p.m., with the meeting following directly after.

Get involved and make an informed voting decision

Most of us know that, very soon, we will once again be electing several new officers to the City Council and Office of Mayor.

Many of you have probably never attended a council meeting and think your attendance doesn’t make that much of a difference. Let me encourage you, as a resident of Winlock, to take the time to attend a few meetings, which take place the second and fourth Mondays each month. Listen to the subjects that need to be discussed and be concerned about what each member of the council feels and desires for the city. I, myself, feel there needs to be more participation from those of us who are registered voters. As you listen and hear the subjects that are discussed, you will know and feel what your own opinion is and how you can have an influence on the community.

Toledo adds $1 mil. to pool of sewer grants

Toledo is $1 million closer to a new wastewater treatment plant after being selected to receive a Community Development Block Grant earlier this month.

It was announced during the June 17 Toledo City Council meeting that, of the 14 cities to receive the grant during this year’s funding cycle, Toledo was the only one to receive the maximum $1 million award, and was one of just two Lewis County cities to be on the list of recipients.

Withdrawal letter remains hurdle for Medic One

While Lewis County Fire District 15 has rescinded its letter of intent to withdraw from Lewis County Medic One, Cowlitz/Lewis Fire District 20 has kept its letter in place, on the grounds they wish to clarify financial expectations beforehand.

Districts 15 and 20, respectively based in Winlock and Vader, had submitted letters of intent earlier this year stating they would withdraw from Medic One in 2014 if its financial management was not evaluated and correspondingly improved. Their contentions had risen in light of a request by Medic One for financial contributions from District 15 and District 2, based in Toledo, in an effort to counter an expected budget shortfall of roughly $45,000 at the end of this year. It had been stated District 20 was not being asked for funding as their budget was significantly smaller than the others.
