Authorities would like to remind residents that, though the next several days are forecasted for warm weather, local bodies of water are still frigid as snow in the mountains continues to melt and flow downstream.

In a release sent Monday, The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office has noted several deaths in the recent past reported during this time of year, as the low temperatures can cause your muscles to cramp and lead to drowning.

It was dramatic. It was disturbing. It was the first of its kind.

To drive home the point that choosing to drink and drive could be the last choice you ever make—not just for yourself—parent, business owner and paramedic Callie Fraser organized a drunk driving simulation for Toledo High School juniors and seniors Thursday just in time for prom season.

The tradition of May Day in Vader has not only been passed down among community members, but has stayed alive through the efforts of its founder’s family members.

Started in 1952 by Lena DeAger, May Day continued under DeAger’s leadership until 1991 when she suffered a debilitating stroke. At that time, her daughters, Diana Trahanes and Wanda Smith, took over leadership of the festival, making sure it continued to be held the first Saturday of each May without missing a beat. However, Trahanes died last year and the future leadership of May Day was called into question, but Smith stepped up to make sure May Day 2013 could still happen and said she was very glad for the turnout and the weather on Saturday.

There has been some delay in fully implementing the new Post Office schedule. The new Window hours (11:30 – 3:30) are in effect, but Lobby hours remain the same (8 – 4:30) until a roll-up window and parcel lockers are installed. After that, the lobby will be open 24 hours a day and staffed only during Window hours.

Meanwhile, the town is getting all decked out for spring – the spring banners are hung, flowers and hanging baskets are ordered, and the flags are flying! Paraphrased from Ryderwood’s Geocache log: "…when we saw this adorable little town, we’re glad we took the side trip!" "…so many people had these unusual PVC flags in their yards… Great cache!"

Father Bolduc succeeded Father Demers as pastor at St. Francis Xavier Mission, and he wrote: "I am greatly pleased with the character of the different nations and I get a great deal of pleasure living with them. They are generally gay and take teasing well. Since I have been with the Cowlitz Tribe I have not converted many. They are unwilling to submit because the conduct of some Canadian servants of the company (Hudson Bay Company) have scandalized them … On the 26th of February, I baptized and married an Indian Man and woman of the Cowlitz Nation. They are possibly the two kindest people of my mission, and I certainly would not change their society for that of many of the Canadians here. They will settle on the land and cultivate in the manner of the white man. The husband is a man of much wit; his wife, whom I have named Ludivine, takes care of my linens and makes me clothes that would not be scorned in Quebec."

Don’t miss the annual Dessert and Gift Auction at the Evaline Elementary School cafeteria! It’s scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. Families of students, classrooms, and several local businesses have donated baked goods, gift baskets, and a host of other goodies to the school’s booster club. I’ve been to this auction before, folks, and it’s awesome. Proceeds help support the students at Evaline.

The United Methodist women have scheduled another estate/rummage sale for Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, the church has added even more to their treasure trove, including some impressive furniture such as a solid maple table set, patio furniture, and an antique washer/ringer machine. Dora Florence Grauman Christensen Cline, of Winlock, died April 30, 2013. Born April 16, 1924, she was 89 years old.

She was preceded in death by husband James Cline, twin sister Doris Robinett, sister Margie Stinson, and brother Bill Grauman.

Jerry L. Brewer, of Winlock, Died April 29, 2013. Born Oct. 18, 1921, he was 91 years old.

He was preceded in death by daughter Candy Brewer and all his brothers and sisters.

Just my opinion but - I found out about this story while responding to a mutual aid call for Winlock at 2 a.m.. I would think taking care of your own should be the first priority of any local fire district and its management.

In game one, the Lady Warhawks took a -30 lead in the bottom of the 4th inning, but then allowed six errors in the remaining innings.  Dustee Alvord scored all three runs for T/W including an inside-the-park home run.

The driver had been traveling on SR 505 at around 3:15 a.m. near Layton Rd., east of Toledo, and encountered a herd of elk in the roadway. Unable to stop in time, the motorist struck a female elk, severely inuring the animal, but was reportedly unharmed as the airbag safely deployed.

Casey S. Fredrick, 27, of Castle Rock, is wanted by Lewis County in connection with charges of custodial interference, violation of a no contact order, residential burglary and theft, third degree.
