Korean War veteran receives long overdue Silver Star Medal
Several hundred community members, well-wishers, dignitaries and friends gathered to view the presentation of the Silver Star Medal to William V. Wuorinen for heroic actions during combat operations in the Korean War, at an award ceremony held at Naselle-Grays River Valley School in Naselle last Wednesday.

The great thing about a well-built robot is they can act without prompting.

The great thing about eighth-graders building robots is they can learn without prompting, which is what teacher Gary Viggers said he has discovered after the start of a robotics class at Winlock Middle School.

Happy February, everyone. This is a special month for me since my wedding anniversary was on Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day is close behind, and my birthday is near the end of the month. I don’t pay much attention to the last one on the list (Happy co-birthday, Patty!), except that it frequently means a spell of nice weather.

It's officially February, days seem to be lengthening, animals sense a transition and gardeners are starting to break out seeds, gardening books and plans for another successful growing season.

Winlock News 02.06.13

Our thanks to Winlock’s Department of Public Works, who finished repairing the floor of the  Winlock Timberland Library ahead of schedule and reopened it last Saturday.

The library has quite the full schedule coming up, so bear with me as I list the upcoming events. First of all, there is Family Story Time Friday at 10:30 a.m. Children age 6 and younger are invited to join in a program of stories, rhymes, songs, and movement games.

Two games before scoring 42 points in a non-league contest against Northwest Christian, the local media took unofficial notice of Winlock Senior Enrique Hernandez.

Tweets requested not only Winlock scores, but the offensive output by the emerging star. In addition, one local sportswriter tweeted about having Hernandez on his "Central League Fantasy Team."

Toledo girls finish with loss to No. 1 Castle Rock

The Toledo girls basketball team finished their season on the road with 56-33 and 62-30 losses to Stevenson and top-ranked, unbeaten Castle Rock.

Chaselin Rice scored 12 points against Stevenson but the Indians were badly out-rebounded. On Friday, Toledo was just another check in a list of defeated opponents for Castle Rock. Both Casee Rice and Chaselin Rice scored 11 points in the final game of the season.

The girls finished 5-13 on the season and 5-10 in the Trico League.

After defeating Stevenson and Castle Rock, the Toledo boys basketball team earned a share of the Trico League Championship.

Winlock girls finish tough schedule

The Winlock girls basketball team finished out their season by playing the top three teams in the Central 2B League.

Winlock finished a tough year with losses at Onalaska, Morton/White Pass and then at home to Pe Ell. Cecila Stalcup, who has been gaining confidence, scored nine points against Onalaska. Against Morton/White Pass, Sydney Bradley exploded for 20 points. The Lady Cardinals finished 2-18 on the season and 0-15 in Central League play.

Crime and Injury Report 02.06.13
Deputies responded to two DUIs within 80 minutes of each other in Winlock Friday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

At 7:20 p.m., deputies responded to a rolled over pickup blocking the street near Mile Marker 1 on Pleasant Valley Rd., north of Winlock. The driver, Erik W. West, 45, of Winlock, was found to be uninjured, but intoxicated, and he was booked for DUI.

Then, at 8:40 p.m., deputies conducted a stop at the intersection of First St. and Church St. in Winlock and contacted Edward R. Turula, 57, of Winlock, and found him to be intoxicated.

A blood drive will take place Feb. 13, from 1-6 p.m. at the Raymond Baptist Church, 913 Duryea. Call Jim Taylor at 942-3742 for an appointment, or just drop in during those hours.

Donors should prepare to give blood by having a light meal and plenty to drink
