Big celebration is now assured

The Raymond Volunteer Fire Department last night definitely decided to take in charge the Fourth of July celebration in this city, and the people of Pacific County may now look for one grand time. A committee from the Merchant's association consisting of Walters and Burke spend considerable time during the week circulating a subscription paper, and were agreeably surprised at the generous response it met with. Those who know the way in which the members of the Raymond fire department take hold of things can well expect a good time. A special meeting is to be held within a few days, when plans will be outlined, and shortly the program will be announced.

Raymond Schools close next week

The public schools of this city will close their year's work next week, and the remaining days of school will be fill with the various activities incident to commencement this week. The baccaleraureate sermon will be preached Sunday evening at the Presbyterian church by Rev. Barclay Acheson, and will and will be attended by the senior class in a body.

Negotiations continue in clerk strike

Negotiations were continuing Thursday morning between striking members of the Retail Clerk's International Association 629 and management representatives. The management people, Ray Meredith, Fred Dracobly, Jr. and Gary Dennis, said they had no comment to make on the strike.

Annual sale of poppies slated by vet group

Purchase of poppies to be sold by veterans' organizations here Friday and Saturday, May 21-22 has been urged in a proclamation signed by Mayor Oscar Holm. Poppies will be sold by both American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. The little flowers are replicas of the wild flowers of France and Belgium which grew on the battlefields and cemeteries of World War I.

Riverdale bridge will be cheaper

The Riverdale bridge replacement effort is behind schedule, but that's because workers just found a way to cut $1.2 million off the price.

The slimmed down $10 million version should be at Department of Transportation headquarters, for review by the end of August, said DOT Plans and Design Engineer Bill Pierce.

The new version calls for the south end of the bridge to be about 50 feet further west than originally planned, he said.

That would eliminate some earth moving and the need for a temporary trestle on the end of the existing span.

DOC prison meeting planned in area

Mayor Marshall Briggs says he will do nothing but wait and hope voters support placing a prison in the area when the issue appears on an advisory ballet on September 8.

"I'm just sitting back," Briggs said. "But if they want it, I'll work my fanny off to get it."

The mayor said he has delivered a letter from county Economic Development Council to the county commissioners, supporting a prison here and asking that the prison be put on an advisory ballet. The commissioners approved a county wide ballot at their May 29 meeting.
