Will run trains by next November

Though there remains but three month's work to be done to complete the line of the Puget Sound and Willapa Harbor railway from Maytown to Raymond, it is not at all likely that the line will be completed before next November. By that month, however, the line will be finished and trains operating through from end to end on regular schedule. This is the announcement made by W. E. Brown, superintendent of construction on the line.

Lebam residence destroyed by fire

Lebam, May 20 - Wednesday night the home of J. A. Dickey was totally destroyed by fire, literally nothing was saved. The fire broke out about 9:30 from an unknown cause. Mrs. Dickey was away from home at the time, attending Rebekah Lodge and Mr. Dickey and his two youngest children, Leora and Elvis, had retired for the night. Mr. Dickey awakened to find his house all in flames.

Burglary at South Bend

Leber Bros. Grocery in South Bend was entered by burglars Sunday night, and several hams and pieces of bacon were taken. Entrance was gained by forcing a window with a chisel, which was left behind. Twenty two dollars in money in the cash drawer was undisturbed. No trace of the marauders has been found.

Dog Committee stages sit down on city hall steps

Last Thursday the Raymond Herald and Advertiser went to press with a story about the city council which included a reference to dogs. Apparently an advance proof of the paper got out on the streets, for almost the exact same moment the press had started to roll, the editor of the Herald looked out the window and saw a delegation o dogs climbing the back stairs of the city hall. There were thee of them, which, as everyone knows, makes a committee.

Negotiations continue in clerk strike

Negotiations were continuing Thursday morning between striking members of the Retail Clerk's International Association 629 and management representatives.

The management people, Ray Meredith, Fred Dracobly, Jr. and Gary Dennis, said they had no comment to make on the strike.

Some members of the union have been operating without a contract since last August. These include hardware, dry goods, variety and bakery clerks. Other members of the same union, such as those working in drug stores, have already negotiated a contract.

Hazardous waste drop off

The first ever household hazardous waste collection will be conducted at the county's public works yard, 108 Second Street Raymond this Saturday from 9am to 3pm.

The event will be sponsored by the county Health and Human Services Department and the WSU Cooperative Extension. Extension Agent Pat Boyes urged area residents to bring old and unwanted hazardous products to the collection.

Safe home members sought

Willapa Harbor Safehomes members are soliciting more pledges in the organization's drive against use of alcohol and drugs by area young persons. Gretchen Gunderson of Safehomes said 18 names have been obtained on pledges by parents that, "all social events in my home will be chaperoned and drug and alcohol free."
